Professional Masonry Unit Takeoff & Pallet Estimator
Estimating masonry materials requires pinpoint precision. Bricks and concrete masonry units (CMU blocks) are sold by the pallet, cube, or thousand-unit lot (M). An underestimation can halt construction while you wait days for factory batch deliveries that may not match your original color dye lot. Over-ordering leaves expensive pallets taking up space that suppliers charge restocking and return freight fees to take back.
This calculator is an advanced masonry takeoff tool for contractors, architects, and DIY builders. It calculates exact brick counts, CMU block quantities, full-height course counts (story pole), pallet loads, shipping weight tonnage, mortar bags, and wall tie reinforcement across clay face brick, architectural concrete blocks, multi-wythe structural walls, and paving bricks.
Brick Sizing, Nominal Dimensions & Coverage Factors
In masonry construction, the actual size of a manufactured brick is typically 3/8″ smaller than its nominal size to account for the standard 3/8″ (10 mm) mortar joint:
| Brick Designation | Manufactured Size (W × H × L) | Nominal Size (with 3/8″ joint) | Bricks per Sq Ft | Bricks per 100 Sq Ft | Avg Weight / Brick |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Modular | 3-5/8″ × 2-1/4″ × 7-5/8″ | 4″ × 2-2/3″ × 8″ | 6.75 | 675 bricks | 4.5 lbs (2.0 kg) |
| Standard / Common | 3-3/4″ × 2-1/4″ × 8″ | 4″ × 2-2/3″ × 8-3/8″ | 6.55 | 655 bricks | 4.8 lbs (2.2 kg) |
| Engineer Modular | 3-5/8″ × 2-3/4″ × 7-5/8″ | 4″ × 3-1/5″ × 8″ | 5.75 | 575 bricks | 5.2 lbs (2.4 kg) |
| Queen Size | 2-3/4″ × 2-3/4″ × 9-5/8″ | 3-1/8″ × 3-1/8″ × 10″ | 5.75 | 575 bricks | 5.1 lbs (2.3 kg) |
| King Size | 2-5/8″ × 2-5/8″ × 9-5/8″ | 3″ × 3″ × 10″ | 4.75 | 475 bricks | 4.8 lbs (2.2 kg) |
| Closure Modular | 3-5/8″ × 3-5/8″ × 7-5/8″ | 4″ × 4″ × 8″ | 4.50 | 450 bricks | 6.5 lbs (2.9 kg) |
| Utility Brick | 3-5/8″ × 3-5/8″ × 11-5/8″ | 4″ × 4″ × 12″ | 3.00 | 300 bricks | 9.5 lbs (4.3 kg) |
| Norman Brick | 3-5/8″ × 2-1/4″ × 11-5/8″ | 4″ × 2-2/3″ × 12″ | 4.50 | 450 bricks | 6.8 lbs (3.1 kg) |
CMU Concrete Block Standards & Coverage
Standard concrete masonry units (CMU) are built on an 8-inch modular grid. Because a standard block is nominally 8 inches tall and 16 inches long, the front face area equals:
Face Area = (8" / 12) × (16" / 12) = 0.667 ft × 1.333 ft = 0.8889 sq ftBlocks per Square Foot = 1 / 0.8889 = 1.125 blocks / sq ft
| CMU Block Size | Actual Dimensions | Nominal Dimensions | Units / Sq Ft | Avg Block Weight | Units / Pallet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4″ CMU Partition | 3-5/8″ × 7-5/8″ × 15-5/8″ | 4″ × 8″ × 16″ | 1.125 | 24 lbs (11 kg) | 120 blocks |
| 6″ CMU Wall | 5-5/8″ × 7-5/8″ × 15-5/8″ | 6″ × 8″ × 16″ | 1.125 | 30 lbs (14 kg) | 96 blocks |
| 8″ CMU Standard | 7-5/8″ × 7-5/8″ × 15-5/8″ | 8″ × 8″ × 16″ | 1.125 | 38 lbs (17 kg) | 72 blocks |
| 10″ CMU Foundation | 9-5/8″ × 7-5/8″ × 15-5/8″ | 10″ × 8″ × 16″ | 1.125 | 45 lbs (20 kg) | 60 blocks |
| 12″ CMU Retaining | 11-5/8″ × 7-5/8″ × 15-5/8″ | 12″ × 8″ × 16″ | 1.125 | 52 lbs (24 kg) | 48 blocks |
The Story Pole & Course Height Rule
Professional brick masons use a mason’s story pole or modular rule when laying brick courses. For standard modular bricks:
- 3 Courses = Exactly 8 Inches (203 mm): Each brick height (2-1/4″) plus its mortar bed joint (3/8″) equals exactly 2-2/3″ (67.7 mm). Three stacked courses align perfectly with a standard 8-inch CMU block course.
- Course Count Formula:
Total Courses = Wall Height (inches) / 2.667 inches. For an 8-foot (96-inch) wall, you will lay exactly 36 vertical courses of modular brick. - Wall Ties: Tie brick veneer back to wood or steel framing every 16″ vertically (every 6 courses of brick) and 24″ horizontally using corrugated galvanized anchors.
Waste Factor & Breakage Recommendations
Never order the exact net count of masonry units. You must incorporate a waste factor to account for corner cuts, saw blade kerf waste, half-brick bats, and pallet transport breakage:
Simple Long Walls
Ideal for straight, uninterrupted foundation walls or long perimeter garden fences with minimal window/door penetrations or corners.
Typical Residential Facade
Recommended for residential homes with multiple window jambs, door openings, corners, gable rake cuts, and soldier course lintels.
Complex & Herringbone
Required for 45-degree herringbone paving patterns, curved circular walls, intricate arches, chimneys, and decorative brick pilasters.
Frequently Asked Questions
170 × 6.75 = 1,148 bricks.
1,280 × 1.125 = 1,440 blocks. With a 5% waste factor, order 1,512 blocks (or 21 full pallets of 72 blocks).
1,000 ÷ 6.75 = 148.1 sq ft). Factoring in a typical 10% waste and cutting margin, budget 1,000 modular bricks for approximately 135 square feet of finished facade.
